Razorcake have interviewed Welly Artcore on their podcast about his great and in-depth new book, 'Nefarious Artists' all about punk rock compilation albums from the seventies and eighties. The podcast includes a soundtrack from some of the bands mentioned. Have a listen and prepare to be transported... Here's the podcast, part one: 1976-1979.
Long before online streaming and even TV music videos, that were beyond the reach of many new bands outside of a lucky spin on the radio, the compilation became the most effective way to access, and be accessed by, the eager new ears and inquisitive minds of the then new punk generation. This podcast of the book Nefarious Artists by Welly of Artcore Fanzine (est. 1986) charts the evolution of the punk rock, post-punk, new wave, hardcore punk, and alternative rock compilation vinyl record from 1976 to 1989. Avoiding the big hits and exploring some lesser known songs, all digitized direct from vinyl with snap, crackle and pop in full effect. There are no online playlists here.
