Alastair MacDonald Jackson
Alastair MacDonald Jackson grew up on the Isle of Skye in the North West of Scotland, and developed a love of alternative sounds via the radio and cassette sharing in school. If he, or his friends wanted to buy records or tapes, it meant a six hour round trip to Inverness on the mainland, and that fact is partially what inspired him to write his first book for Earth Island –‘Dear Smash Hits, We’re From Scotland!’
In 2010, he took up photography, and in 2019 had his first book, ‘The Spirit of the Hebrides’ published by St Andrew Press. It was longlisted for the Highland Book Prize that same year, and encouraged by this, Alastair continued his photographic journey, publishing a photozine with ADM Publishing in 2021. He then, over the course of two years, embarked on a travel odyssey - walking, photographing and camping on 42 west coast islands, with the best of these collected images being compiled in a book due for publication in March 2025 by Amberley Publishing.
He still lives on the west coast of Scotland, near the town of Largs, and is currently working on a photography project documenting Orkney and Shetland, which is due for completion in 2026.
